MANIHI
- DIVING
Manihi,
one of the Tuamotu atolls, some 520 km to the North-East of Tahiti, is
a case in point. Known mainly for its production of black pearls, its
translucent lagoon, 30 km long and 6 km wide is immediate vicinity is
a springboard for a number of excursions which perfectly capture everything
that polynesia’s underwater flora and fauna have to offer, and all this
only two minutes away by speedboat from Manihi’s unique hotel, the Manihi
Pearl Beach Resort, which, with its 30 bungalows on poles ( endly 1995),
its restaurant, bar and boutique and games room providing an ideal setting
for the headquarters of Manihi Blue Nui dive centre: the most up-to-date
diving equipment, highly competent instructors, your dive recorded on
video. The cooperation of these two entreprises is tailor-made to help
you discover Manihi, the optimum of everything beautiful in Polynesia,
accessible to all and the idea spot for observing those queens of the
ocean: Manta rays, enormours, majestic, graceful. Pure delight!

DIVING
SPOTS IN MANIHI
1
- DESCENDING THE TAIRAPA INLET.
Its
small size ( 400m long, 50m wide) makes for a high level of safety and
excellent viewing conditions when moving through it ( look for yellow
and white butterfly fish, striped bull fish, short crested nasons, loach,
multicoloured parrot-fish, massive outcrops of pocillopora coral).
2
- MANIHI INLET, RIGHT-HAND EXIT.
This
is the perfect spot for a close up look at the merous, which, during the
austral winter ( the second half of July, in keeping with the lunar cycle)
arrive here by their thousands to reproduce, to the absolute delight of
divers who are also in close contact with balisters, blue striped perch,
magnificent Napoleon fish, grey sharks, white finned lagoon sharks, carangues,
barracudas and other priacanths, with special mention of the nonchalant
grace of the manta rays, undentable rulers of this kingdom.
3
- THE MOUTH OF THE TAIRAPA INLET.
All
the species mentioned above come here to feed; the density of the underwater
population at this point is staggering. Water currents play a larger part.
So does the natural mixing of the various fish foods. The fish love it.
Short-crested nasons, striped nasons, schools of becunes, barracudas,
perch, red lutjans and fat Napoleon fish, grey sharks, carangues, loach.
Everyone joins in the ride.
4 - THE CARROT.
The
coral formations overshadow the ichtyological fauna mottled loach, tuna,
black nasons and uncover a fairyland spectacle of porites, acropa and
fire coral so very typical of Polynesia.

Organization of the Dives:
Due
to the fact that the dive sites are located within 10 minutes of
the center, our schedule is rather flexible. We organize two dives
each day for certified divers and beginners.
Generally
at 8:30am and 1:30pm for certified divers, and for beginners at
10:30am and eventually 3:00pm if requested.
Since
we are located within the hotel, we ask to meet with divers every
evening at the bar between 6:30 and 7:00pm to be able to organize
the dives for the next day and answer any questions.
