NUKU
HIVA - DIVING SPOTS
In
the furthest polynesian archipelago from Tahiti ( some 1500km to the North-East)
specific dives await amateur and experts alike. Only one club in Nuku
Hiva. Forget the troubles of city life and modern noises, the waters are
rich in fish life. Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands may not have a lagoon,
but the island offers one that is bound to please any thrillseekeers:
a large number of underwater caves teeming with spectacular fauna. And
of course the sharks have not been forgotten. Far from it.

NUKU
HIVA DIVING SPOTS
1
- DULCINEA.
Twenty
metres under is the ideal spot for working up an appetite, for real as
well as in a figurative sense. Be careful though; fishing in scuba gear
is strictly forbidden in French Polynesia. There is a magnificent cave,
refuge to innumerable crayfish, cigalas and a multitude of shells, not
to forget of course the school of (rougets) and perch.
2 - THE HAMMERHEAD SENTINEL.
It
is always impressive to come across, in the deep, manta and leopard rays
and a wide diversity of animal life. More surprising still, and very rare,
to spot hammerhead sharks with such regularity. This is virtually guaranteed
to happen between 20m and 40k down.
3
- THE EKAMAKO CAVE.
The
focus this time is not so much on the cave itself as much as the guardians
found at its entrance. ( Pastenague) rays are there for your eyes and
underwater camera only. Close relatives to the Manta, their movements
are just as graceful and will thrill all the amateurs.
4 - THE PYGMEE-ORCAS.
A
remarkable dive over a school of several hundred pygmee-orcas, accessible
to divers at all levels due to the minimal depth: o to 20m! Only one prerequisite:
a calm sea. This is only place in French Polynesia where such viewing
is possible.
5
- MATATEIKO POINT.
This
rocky outcrop, 20 to 40m down, is very rich in a particular type of fauna:
Manta and leopard rays, schools of carangues and reef life, various kinds
of shark, including the famous breasted hammerhead.
