TIKEHAU
- DIVING
Tikehau
is a virtually circular atoll in the Tuamotu group, with a 26 km long
lagoon and a single inlet allowing the passage of only the smallest of
boats. When captain Cousteau’s research team made a study of the polynesian
atolls in 1987, the Tikehau lagoon was declared to have the highest fish
population of all the polynesian « low » islands. Fish parks constitute
the greatest source of income for the 312 inhabitants who regularly ship
their parrot-fish and other lagoon fish off to Tahiti. Its lagoon is the
focal point of the island. An excursion trip to the fish parks and the
motu provides the opportunity for some spear-fishing and a dive in the
crystal clear water of the lagoon. A good walk will reveal the beauty
of the village and its surrounds. The dive centre, open seven days a week,
is in the village itself and a twenty to thirty minute boat trip will
get you to the dive spots, with the exception of a few lagoon dives. This
has led to the centre to offer day-trips, with a dive in the morning,
a picnic on a motu, and a dive in the afternoon.

DIVING
SPOTS IN TIKEHAU
1
- MARA.
Surrounded
by Napoleon-fish, you can observe at leisure the great Manta rays which
come here to have their parasites dealt with by the little cleaner-fish.
Meetings with albimarginatus sharks are not uncommon.
2 - RAIRA CAVE.
Numerous
grey sharks live in these caves and along a fault in the reef. You will
also find there a great school of barracudas then, safe in the clefts
of the reef, hundreds of rougets.
3
- THE TUHEIAVA INLET.
The
dive is performed on the incoming current. Manta rays are often found,
as well as a large school of carangues. Then a little further along the
inlet, about ten white pointer sharks squeezed together under a rocky
outcrop.
4
- TURTLE HOLE.
Flanked
by dolphins, the boat will drop anchor above a basin which doubles as
a nocturnal refuge for turtles. In this subsidence of the reef, you can
count, within a small area, a multitude of different species. An easy
and relatively shallow dive ( 18m), notable for the diversity of fish.
5
- TEAVATIA.
Once
an inlet, slowly occlured over the centuries; the coral here shows outstanding
diversity, colour and richness. Sharks and rays are quite common.
6
- THE THRUST.
A
relatively deep dive ( 45m), reserved for experienced divers. You’ll observe
the passage of « big » school - tune, swordfish, sail-fish or white pointer
reef sharks. The red coral is breathtaking.

Diving Schedule
For
certified divers
We organize two-tank dives each morning. The meeting time is generally
at 8:30am. This way, while limiting the transportation time, you
can enjoy two different dives in one half-day. The return is usually
between 11:30 and 12 noon depending on the distance of the sites.
This leaves you the rest of the afternoon to take advantage of other
activities.
If you would also like to do another (or only one) dive in the afternoon,
no problem! A second outing is scheduled, but this time to only
one site. The meeting time is at 1:30pm with a return at around
3pm.
By request, for a minimum of 4 divers, night dives can be arranged.
For
beginners :
Fun dives or lessons are organized each morning and afternoon as
needed. Initiation dives are organized each afternoon and meet at
the center at 1pm. The dive center is open all year long.
